No. Gamstop Online is not a general video-game blocker and it does
not normally stop access to Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo or
ordinary mobile games. The official service is designed to restrict
access to online gambling accounts operated under Great Britain
licences.
There is one important grey area: a free game supplied by a
UK-licensed gambling company may be unavailable during an exclusion.
That is different from an ordinary video game. Gamstop Online says it
does not cover online games that offer no opportunity to gain or
withdraw money, even when those games include in-game purchases.
This guide explains the boundary, what the service can and cannot
block, and what to check if a game or account behaves unexpectedly. It
was checked against official Gamstop Online and Gambling Commission
information on 8 October 2026.
What Gamstop Online
actually blocks
Gamstop Online is a national online self-exclusion scheme. When
someone registers, participating gambling companies licensed in Great
Britain must use the scheme to help prevent that person from opening or
using covered online gambling accounts.
The practical focus is therefore accounts on gambling websites and
apps, rather than the phone, computer or console itself. Registration is
not the same as installing technical blocking software. It also does not
turn a console account, app store or broadband connection into a
universal content filter.
The Gambling Commission requires remote licensees in scope to
participate in the national multi-operator self-exclusion scheme.
Operators use personal details to identify registered people. Keeping
names, addresses, email addresses and telephone numbers current helps
matching work as intended.
For a broader introduction to the two similarly named subjects, see
our guide to GameStop and
GAMSTOP.
Does GAMSTOP block
ordinary video games?
Gamstop Online’s official answer is clear: it does not cover online
games with no opportunity to gain or withdraw money, even if they offer
in-game purchases.
That means an ordinary paid game, subscription game, free-to-play
title or social game does not become a covered gambling service merely
because it:
- sells cosmetic items, expansion packs or virtual currency;
- includes randomised rewards that cannot be cashed out through the
game; - has an age rating or parental controls;
- uses an online account or multiplayer service; or
- is downloaded from a console, computer or mobile app store.
Those features can still raise spending, design or child-safety
questions, but Gamstop Online does not present itself as the control for
them. Use the platform’s own parental controls, purchase approval
settings and spending restrictions where appropriate. Our Steam Families guide explains one example of
household game and purchase controls.
Why some free games may be
affected
The word “free” does not settle the question. Gamstop Online says
that if a UK-licensed gambling company offers free games, a registered
person may not be able to play them during the exclusion. Its help page
gives Sky’s Super6 as an example and advises contacting the gambling
company to confirm.
The relevant distinction is who provides the product and how it sits
within a licensed gambling service. A promotion, predictor or free game
attached to an operator account may rely on the same customer login and
exclusion controls as paid gambling products. It can therefore be
restricted even when no deposit is required for that particular
activity.
By contrast, an ordinary game with no route to gain or withdraw money
is outside the coverage described by Gamstop Online. The presence of
optional in-game purchases alone does not change that official
answer.
Video games,
gambling games and prize mechanics
Some digital products combine game-like presentation with staking,
prizes or cash withdrawal. The label used in an app store is less useful
than the product’s real function and licensing status.
Ask these questions:
- Is the product offered through a gambling website or app?
- Does a person stake money or something of value on an uncertain
outcome? - Can money or a money-equivalent prize be won or withdrawn?
- Is the provider licensed by the Gambling Commission for the
activity? - Does access depend on an account with a participating gambling
company?
A “casino game” on a licensed gambling site is not treated like an
ordinary entertainment game just because it has graphics, levels or
bonus rounds. Equally, a video game does not automatically become
covered by Gamstop Online because it includes virtual currency or
optional purchases.
If the classification is unclear, check the provider’s Gambling
Commission licence and ask the provider which products are connected to
the excluded account. Do not rely on marketing labels such as “social”,
“free” or “game” by themselves.
What GAMSTOP does not
promise to block
Gamstop Online is a targeted account-based measure. It should not be
described as a complete internet or device block.
It does not, by itself, promise to remove:
- ordinary video games or gaming accounts;
- general gambling advertising, streams, news or social-media
content; - every app or website that uses gambling imagery;
- high-street betting shops or other land-based venues;
- all lottery products;
- gambling services outside the Great Britain licensing and
participation framework; or - card and bank transfers to gambling companies.
Land-based self-exclusion uses separate arrangements. Payment blocks
are offered by many banks, while gambling-blocking software can add a
technical barrier on phones, tablets and computers. The official Gamstop
Online support page recommends combining measures where useful.
Is GAMSTOP the same as
parental controls?
No. Gamstop Online is intended for a person who chooses online
gambling self-exclusion. Parental controls manage a child’s access to
games, communication features, purchases or play time. They solve
different problems.
On a games platform, parental controls may:
- require approval before a purchase;
- restrict titles by age rating;
- limit play time;
- control chat or community access; and
- show activity reports.
Gamstop Online does not replace those controls. Likewise, parental
controls are not a substitute for a formal gambling self-exclusion when
a person needs participating licensed operators to restrict covered
accounts.
What to do
if an ordinary gaming account is affected
First identify which company has applied the restriction. Similar
names cause confusion: GameStop is a games retailer, while Gamstop
Online is a UK gambling self-exclusion scheme.
Then check:
- Whether the product is actually attached to a gambling operator
account. - Whether the message came from Gamstop Online, the gambling company,
a bank, a platform owner or installed blocking software. - Whether the account also uses a parental-control, family or spending
restriction. - Whether the provider can explain the exact product and policy
responsible.
Contact the provider that controls the account for an
account-specific answer. Gamstop Online’s helpdesk can assist with its
registration and account details, but it cannot manage a Steam, console
or retailer account. Never send identity documents to an unrelated
website claiming it can remove a valid exclusion.
Adding
stronger barriers without blocking all games
Someone may want to keep ordinary video games available while
reducing access to gambling. The official tools-and-support guidance
lists several separate layers:
- Gamstop Online for covered online gambling accounts;
- Gamstop Betting Shops for participating high-street bookmakers;
- gambling-payment blocks from a bank;
- gambling-blocking software on devices; and
- confidential advice through the National Gambling Helpline.
Each layer has a different scope. Blocking software may affect
websites and apps at device level, so its settings and support
information matter when an ordinary game is unexpectedly unavailable. A
bank block works at the payment level and does not normally control game
access.
Common questions
Does GAMSTOP block Steam?
Gamstop Online does not describe Steam as a covered gambling
operator, and its official guidance excludes online games with no
opportunity to gain or withdraw money. A separate device blocker, family
control or account restriction could still affect access.
Does GAMSTOP stop in-game
purchases?
Not as a general rule. The official help page says games without an
opportunity to gain or withdraw money are not covered even if they offer
in-game purchases. Use platform purchase controls or bank tools if
spending is the concern.
Can a gambling
company’s free game be blocked?
Yes, it may be. Gamstop Online says free games offered by a
UK-licensed gambling company can be unavailable during an exclusion. The
company can confirm whether a specific free product is linked to the
restriction.
Does GAMSTOP
block gambling adverts inside games?
Gamstop Online is not an advertising filter. Platform ad settings,
browser or device controls, and marketing opt-outs are separate
measures.
Can
GAMSTOP remove an exclusion early so a game works?
No early removal should be expected. A selected minimum exclusion
period cannot be cancelled early. If the issue concerns an ordinary
game, identify the actual restriction rather than asking an unrelated
service to change Gamstop Online records.
The short answer
Gamstop Online blocks access to covered online gambling accounts, not
video gaming as a category. Ordinary online games remain outside the
scope it describes when they provide no opportunity to gain or withdraw
money, even if they include in-game purchases. Free games supplied by a
licensed gambling company may be treated differently.
